Sustainable Structural Solutions
One of the many approaches used by Booth and Son Restoration Ltd is the Helifix system, as utilised by our experienced team,
which provides a rapid, cost-effective means of restoring structural integrity to
buildings and structures where the masonry has failed and lost its load bearing capabilities. In older properties this is often as a result of historic movement.
The Helifix system is approved by English Heritage and Listed Buildings applications, as it offers the opportunity to stabilise structures without the need for intrusive demolition and rebuilding.
We have successfully deployed these techniques on Listed Buildings and buildings on the BAR (Buildings at Risk) register, where other methods would have been rejected because of the risk of further damage to the structures.
We are often called upon to rectify problems caused by inappropriate repair methods, a common problem being cement render applied to older structures in an attempt to strengthen failing walls (See example below). In most instances this has a devastating effect over time as the cement does not allow the structure to move as it was designed to do. The Cement render eventually cracks, allowing moisture and frost damage.
How it works...
Where masonry has cracked and failed, as a result of ground movement, component failure, weathering or increased loads and stresses, the Helibeam System comprises the installation of horizontal bed-joint reinforcement by tying the masonry together and creating deep masonry beams which distribute the structural loads. Other ties and fixings provide appropriate lateral and vertical restraint to complete the system which has been proven in all types of masonry structures, including lime mortars.
