English Heritage and Listed Buildings Applications

Booth and Son Restoration Ltd are experienced in liaising with English Heritage on their requirements to protect and promote England's spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood.
English Heritage is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. They also award Grants in certain circumstances to aid the maintenance & repair of certain historic buildings, and, of course, here at Booth and Son Restoration Ltd. we have experience in dealing with these requirements.
Many works carried out on Grade I and II* listed buildings require the approval of English Heritage. Owners are not obliged to carry out repairs to their listed buildings, but Local Authorities can take action if it becomes evident that a listed building is becoming neglected.
"Carrying out unauthorised work to a listed building is a criminal offence punishable by a fine or a prison sentence and the local council can require you to put the building back as it was."
You will need to secure listed building consent from your local council if you are planning to demolish a listed building or any part of it, or alter it in any way which would affect its character, inside or out. Repairs which match exactly may not need consent, but Booth and Son Restoration Ltd. and your local council will advise you on this as the effect of any repairs is not always straightforward.
Examples of work which may need consent include changing windows and doors, painting over brickwork or removing external surfaces, putting in dormer windows or rooflights, putting up aerials, satellite dishes and burglar alarms, changing roofing materials, moving or removing internal walls, making new doorways, and removing or altering fireplaces, panelling or staircases.
We are experienced in dealing with all the requirements of English Heritage, and as such we can offer you a complete 'project management' service if required. We take on the responsibility of liaising with the various bodies and find our experienced approach can make things run a lot smoother on your behalf.
